58 mm or 80 mm: the short answer
Buy an 80 mm printer with an auto-cutter if you have one fixed counter and more than about 60 bills a day. Buy a 58 mm printer if you bill from a phone, have a small counter, or print fewer and shorter bills.
The 80 mm printer fits more on each line, so item names are not cut off and the GST table stays readable. The 58 mm printer is cheaper, smaller and comes in battery-powered Bluetooth models that work with an Android phone.
What the width really changes
Most billing printers print at about 203 dots per inch, which is 8 dots per millimetre. The paper is wider than the printed area, so a 58 mm roll gives roughly 48–52 mm of print, depending on the model, and an 80 mm roll about 72 mm. On a common printer like the Epson TM-T20II, the standard print width is 72 mm on 80 mm paper and 52.5 mm on 58 mm paper.
With the usual standard font, each character is 12 dots wide. That gives the numbers you will see in printer specs:
| 58 mm printer | 80 mm printer | |
|---|---|---|
| Printable width (typical) | 48 mm (384 dots) | 72 mm (576 dots) |
| Characters per line, normal font | 32 | 48 (some models 42) |
| Characters per line, small font | about 42 | about 64 |
| Item name on one line with qty, rate, amount | About 12–14 letters | About 22–26 letters |
| Common roll sold as | 57 mm or "2 inch" | 79 mm or "3 inch" |
Look at what this means on a bill. "Aashirvaad Atta 5kg" is 19 characters. On 58 mm it either wraps to two lines or gets cut. On 80 mm it fits next to the quantity, rate and amount. If your bills carry MRP, savings, a GST-by-rate table or the HSN code, 80 mm is far easier to read.
Paper rolls: sizes, length and cost
Thermal rolls are sold by width and length. Common lengths are 15 m, 25 m, 30 m and 50 m. Check the outer diameter your printer takes before buying long rolls. Small portable printers often take only short rolls.
A typical kirana bill with 6–10 items is about 10–20 cm long. So a 50 m roll gives roughly 250–500 bills. A 15 m roll gives only 75–150.
Prices vary a lot by length, paper thickness (GSM), brand and city. As of October 2026, bulk listings from Indian sellers on IndiaMART put common 57 mm and 79 mm rolls at roughly ₹15–₹45 a roll. Single rolls bought from a local shop usually cost more. Always compare price per metre, not per roll, because a cheap roll is often a short one.
- Buy a small pack first and test print quality before buying a carton.
- Very thin paper jams more and fades faster.
- Keep at least two weeks of rolls in stock. Running out during rush hour is common.
USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi/LAN
| Connection | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| USB | One Windows computer at one counter | Needs a driver; cable length limits where the printer sits |
| Bluetooth | Billing from an Android phone or tablet; mobile and van sales | Pair it with only one phone at a time; battery models need charging |
| Wi-Fi or LAN (Ethernet) | Two or more counters sharing a printer, or a kitchen/packing printer away from the counter | Give it a fixed IP address on your router, or it may "disappear" after a power cut |
Many printers sold in India come with two connections, for example USB plus Bluetooth, or USB plus LAN. These cost a little more but give you a fallback if one connection fails.
Auto-cutter, speed and other features
- Auto-cutter: cuts the bill after printing. At a busy counter it saves a few seconds per bill and gives a clean edge. Most 80 mm counter printers have it. Most 58 mm printers have only a tear bar.
- Speed: counter printers commonly run at 150–250 mm per second. Portable Bluetooth printers are slower. For a small shop, any counter printer is fast enough.
- Cash drawer port: many 80 mm printers have an RJ11 port that opens the cash drawer when a bill prints. Check this if you plan to buy a drawer.
- Language: if you want item names in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi or another script, the software usually prints them as an image. That works on any thermal printer but is slightly slower.
ESC/POS and drivers on Windows
ESC/POS is the command language most receipt printers understand. It was started by Epson and is copied by almost every brand, including the low-cost ones. If a printer says "ESC/POS compatible", most billing software can drive it.
On Windows, set it up like this:
- Install the driver from the maker's website or the CD in the box. Generic printers often install as "POS-58" or "POS-80".
- Print a self-test page. Most printers do this when you hold the feed button while switching on. It shows the model, interface and code page.
- In the printer's preferences, set the paper width to 58 or 80 mm and turn off big top and bottom margins.
- Print a test bill from your billing software and check that long names, totals and the GST table fit.
If bills print with large blank space, wrong width or strange characters, the paper size or code page setting is usually the cause, not the printer.
Using a printer with an Android phone
For billing from a phone, a Bluetooth printer is the simplest. Pair it in the phone's Bluetooth settings first, then select it inside the billing app. Some printers ask for a PIN while pairing; it is usually 0000 or 1234, printed in the manual.
Wi-Fi printers also work with Android if the phone and printer are on the same network. USB printers can work through an OTG cable with some apps, but this is less reliable and not supported everywhere. Prefer Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
When you need A4 instead
A thermal bill is fine for walk-in customers. Use A4 (from a normal laser or inkjet printer) when:
- You sell to other businesses who need a proper tax invoice with their GSTIN, address and an HSN summary for their records.
- Your business must issue e-invoices. The signed QR code and IRN are usually printed on an A4 invoice. See our guide to e-invoicing under GST.
- Goods move with an e-way bill and the transporter needs a printed invoice. See e-way bill rules.
- A customer wants a bill to claim from an employer or insurer.
Many distributors keep both: a thermal printer for counter sales and an A4 printer for B2B invoices. What a GST bill must show is the same in both cases; see the GST invoice format.
Caring for thermal paper and the printer
Thermal paper turns dark where it is heated. It does not use ink, so it also fades with heat, light and some chemicals. Zebra's receipt paper specs, for example, warn that heat above 40°C or humidity above 60% over long periods reduces contrast. They also warn against plastic folders containing plasticisers, PVC and solvents such as alcohol.
- Store rolls in a closed box, away from sunlight and the shop's hot wall or shutter.
- Do not keep bills in plastic sleeves or next to sanitiser.
- Do not rely on thermal bills as your only record. Your software should keep the copy. For anything you must keep for years, such as supplier bills, keep a scan or photo.
- Clean the print head every few rolls with a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol, with the printer off and cool. Faint lines down the bill usually mean dust on the head.
- Use the correct roll width. A narrower roll in a wider printer wears the head where there is no paper.
Decision table by shop type
| Shop | Suggested printer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small kirana, under 60 bills a day, billing from a phone | 58 mm Bluetooth | Cheap, no computer needed, fits on a small counter |
| Busy kirana or mini supermarket with a computer | 80 mm USB with auto-cutter | Readable bills, fast, opens the cash drawer |
| Supermarket with 2+ counters | 80 mm with auto-cutter at each counter, USB or LAN | One printer per counter avoids queues |
| Bakery or sweet shop | 80 mm USB or LAN | Quick bills; a second printer can print orders for the packing area |
| Medical store | 80 mm thermal, plus A4 for some bills | Batch and expiry need space on each line |
| Distributor or wholesaler | A4 printer, plus 58 mm Bluetooth for van sales | B2B customers need full tax invoices |
Rough prices as of October 2026, which vary by brand and city: basic 58 mm USB or Bluetooth printers start around ₹1,500–₹4,000; 80 mm counter printers with an auto-cutter are commonly ₹5,000–₹12,000. A well-known model such as the TVS RP3160 Gold was listed at under ₹10,000 by an Indian retailer.
Doing this in Cartix Prime
Cartix Prime prints to 58 mm and 80 mm thermal printers and to A4. A4 invoices carry an HSN summary, amount in words, bank details and terms, with up to 3 copies. On Windows, printing goes through the Print Bridge app. On Android, you can print to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi printers. You can also add your logo, MRP and savings, GST by rate and a UPI QR for amounts due. USB and thermal printing are included from the Starter plan. See the billing app for Android or retail POS software.
Questions people ask
How many characters fit on a 58 mm thermal bill?
About 32 characters per line in the normal font, and about 42 in the small font. An 80 mm printer fits about 48 characters in the normal font, though some models are set to 42. This is why long item names often wrap on 58 mm bills.
Can I use an 80 mm roll in a 58 mm printer?
No. A 58 mm printer only takes rolls about 57–58 mm wide. Many 80 mm printers can take 58 mm rolls with a paper guide and a settings change, but using the narrower roll wears the print head and is not recommended for daily use.
Why do thermal bills fade?
Thermal paper has no ink. Heat, sunlight, humidity, plastic sleeves and solvents such as sanitiser react with the coating and make the print fade. Keep important bills as scans or in your billing software, not only on thermal paper.
Do I need a driver for a thermal printer?
On Windows, usually yes. Install the maker’s driver or the generic POS-58 or POS-80 driver, set the paper width, then print a test bill. On Android, Bluetooth printers are paired in settings and selected inside the billing app; no driver is needed.
Is a Bluetooth printer good enough for a shop counter?
For a small shop billing from a phone, yes. For a busy counter, a USB or LAN printer with an auto-cutter is faster and does not need charging. Bluetooth is best for phones, mobile sales and small counters.
